Would a dame + scoot backcourt work for portland? What if this becomes the case over the course of the first 20 games? And we are left with squat. Dames value increases and he opens up his options of other teams? And he’s traded for a haul to Boston, Milwaukee or Philly? Has Pat lost his touch and underestimated little Joe ?
On the other hand, what if Dame reports to Portland and suffers an ACL or Achilles injury during training camp? What happens to his $216 million/4 year value then? Better yet, what if such an injury occurs AFTER Miami goes "all in" and gives away it's youth, draft picks and future? If the Heat can get Dame for Lowry, a couple of rotation players and 3-4 draft picks, cool. If not, I would take a big pass on the trade and look for other deals.
A better question might be what happens if Herro and Jamie J and Jovic and Highsmith and Cain all play well, and the Heat are a top-3 seed in December. It's not like this team wasn't a 1-seed the season before last. Do you break up the team to trade for Dame?
“And we are left with squat”???? What we’d be left with is a solid team. The only real weakness is at point guard with Vincent gone, and he was an adequate, not great, player. It shouldn’t be hard to find a replacement. Duncan for Strus is basically a wash. The team added Jaquez, Richardson, Thomas, and O Robinson (with Cain on at least a 2 way now). We’ve seen solid improvement from Jovic, who essentially didn’t play last season. And we’d keep all of our draft picks and possibly use one to get a pg.
if Riley gives up the equivalent of 5 first round picks (Herro, Jaquez, Jovic, and 2 futures) plus players for a 33 year old player with an egregious contract, then I’d think he’d ‘lost his touch’.
yeah, right now the Heat payers under-25 include Bam, Herro, Jovic, Jaquez, Cain, Highsmith, and Robinson. I mean, I love Dame, but that's a great young core. Martin is only 27. The vets on this team are Jimmy Butler, Kyle Lowry (expiring) and Kevin Love (vet minimum). That's eleven dudes, before you add Thomas Bryant and J-Rich!
I love Dame, but I really don't want to break this team up. Keep in mind, my original screen name was 'odom butler wade', so you know how i feel about trading the young guys for stars, even if it leads to championships.
But this Heat team is 12-deep. If they can swap a couple dudes for Dame, that's awesome. Throw in whatever picks, who cares. But if they have to gut this team for Dame, I'd rather just dance with the ones that brought us the past four years.
FIBA world championship 2023 is officially over. What a great tournament! Elimination games were fantastic. Germany playing in full strenght with all their stars have rightfully won it all.
Nikola Jovic was in tears after Serbia's loss to Germany. Serbia gets silver, while Canada and Kelly Olynik grab bronze in a great game vs the US. SGA and Dillon Brooks destroying Team USA. Dennis Schroeder voted MVP of the tournament.
It was so much fun to see these NBA players play for their national teams. I am already looking forward to the 2024 Olympic games. USA should have enough motivation not to take it lightly. Will they bring the Redeem Team 2? I think they need it, the rest of the world is getting better and better.
I just watched the highlights of the Final. Jovic looks good as hell. After watching Bam almost get traded to Minnesota for Jimmy Butler and Precious get traded to Toronto for Kyle Lowry, I would be fine to see Jovic stick around on the Heat and see what he develops into
Serbia got bad calls in the 3rd. Still almost caught up. Congrats to both! Yes it was a great tournament. Respect to Brooks...but I still don't like him lol
6'11" Nikola Jokić was drafted by Denver in 2014 in Rd 2, Pk 41.
6'10" Nikola Jović (who just turned 20 on June 9, 2023) was drafted by Miami in 2022, Rd 1, Pk 27. From what I have seen of this 20 year old G/F, the sky is the limit. I would definitely not include him in any potential trade scenario with Portland.
Likewise, I think neither Herro nor Jaquez should be included in any Portland trade. Both are on great contracts and still have much room to improve (Herro especially has room on the defensive end).
At best, I would give Portland Lowry or Robinson, a rotation player (or two) and 3-4 draft picks. Otherwise, no deal.
Miami has more than enough assets to trade for a player/or players who can put this team over the top. After all, if both Lillard and Portland refuse to budge, with an expiring contract like Lowry's, rotation players such as Martin, Robinson and others, plus draft picks available, Riley should explore all options.
As I said, I watched him a lot in Dallas. Great player, but has large problem with focus.
He was great in defence for one month, after that more and less terrible and probably makes much more damage in defence then good in offence. Thats why he played less and less in Dallas.
Maybe Lebron and Davis will make him do it in the right way. Luka and Kidd coudnt.
Yup. We already have a center with mediocre defensive skills (Thomas). Don't need two. Sure could use a good back-up point guard without giving up the ranch. I wonder what it would take to get someone like Killian Hayes, Cole Anthony or TJ McConnel? I would love to see Jaquez and Jovic getting combo guard/ball handling responsibilities off the bench, when game situations permit. We might have something there.
i think thats whats between the lines on the Wood deal. Labor Day is over and NBA teams are back in business.
I'm curious to see whether the Blazers can find another trade partner, or if Miami makes a smaller move to add a guard while keeping Herro. If neither of those things happen, then I think Dame is in Miami by the start of training camp.
I agree. I just hope Miami doesn't give up too much to get him. Swapping Herro, Jovic, Jaquez, and 3 first rounders is too f'ing much. That's equal to 5 first rounders plus a 23 year old 20 ppg potential all-star on a very affordable contract. I can see foresee Lillard coming to Miami and having a season ending injury that leaves the Heat sucking wind for years. FTS! Meanwhile, we still don't have a legit, two-way power forward since Spo insists on playing Bam at center. If it was me, I would pass on Lillard and trade for a good two-way power forward or center to pair with Bam and a legit, two-way, starting PG. But that's just me.
I agree with the basic premise. It would be cool if the Heat could keep Herro and add one awesome frontcourt partner for Bam.
But Zach Lowe used to say that adding a superstar is not a restaurant menu. You don't get to chose what you want. If you're lucky enough to get a superstar, you take what you can get and figure it out later.
Dame is that superstar for the Heat right now. It's not do or die. If they don't get Dame this season, they might get Mitchell next season or Giannis in two seasons. But they also might get nothing. If they need to give up a bunch of draft picks, I'm fine with it. But I would like to keep some of the young players, this team will be way over the cap and they'll need them.
Let's see if Riley can work his magic one more time. I just hope he doesn't develop tunnel vision and decide to give away the team's future for his one last shot at glory.
He was always a terrible fit for the Heat. I never believed the rumors that he was going to Miami. I'm just glad he didn't end up in Boston or Milwaukie
For that price, I’d take a chance in a heartbeat on a 6’ 9” player that averages 17/7 and 38% 3p%. There’s just not much you can lose, especially with the insane money being thrown out there now.
I lived through the Michael Beasley experience multiple times. I don't need another talented bonehead throwing the ball out of bounds in the last minute of a game. Unless they bring back Michael Beasley for one more run.
"Small ball" is a hoax. The Heat lost to the Lakers in 2020 and the Nuggets in 2023 because of it's limitations. The U.S. lost to Lithu(fargin)ania because of it. It works when a team can take advantage of certain mismatches. However, it is not so effective against taller teams that can exploit it's shortcomings. The Heat will never win an NBA Title with Bam as center, unless they also have a strong, athletic two-way power forward playing next to him to share the interior duties. Bam is great at what he does but he is not able to match up 1:1 with the monsters of the NBA! That is too much to ask of him!
I know this is not the best US can offer, but still, this team is made of most of the best young US players. And its not very good. A medal is not a given.
I think this USA team is really good. I just think that the world has caught up, and even if the talent 1-12 is better on team USA, there are a lot of good teams that might win this tournament.
This US team has got 2 stars in Edwards and Brunson. The rest are role players and very young guys. It's no dream team. But I still like this team, most of the players are hard working guys, skilled, with good defense. But as Lithuania has shown, they are beatable (by a more experienced team). Germany and Canada are definitely capable of it.
I like this guy, been reading his pieces over at blazersedge.
"Dame is certainly within his rights to demand a trade to one team." He knows the FO of Portland messed up he just doesn't want to admit it straight up in his writeups but he's objective and sees (and feels?) the "pain" of Blazers fans. Again sad for them, but for us hope that we can move on already and imo just drop out of this deal. Sorry Dame. We have enough.
I figure Pat Riley will make a final call during training camp, whether it's to make the trade or pull out, so it's not haning over the team once the season starts. Similar to the Jimmy Butler trade with Minnasota.
Also, I just heard Brian Windhorst talking about the Philippines on Hoop Collective and he was raving about it.
I respect the esteemed Dave Deckard from Blazer's Edge, but I have to call him out on one thing.
He said that even if the Heat trade for Dame, he's still not sure if they're better than the Sixers, Celtics, and Bucks. In the past 4 years, the Heat have a winning record against all of those teams in the playoffs. They're 5-2, with 3 trips to the Eastern Conference Finals and two trips to the NBA Finals. So unless Dave thinks trading for Dame will make the Heat worse, they are the unquestionable best team in the East if they add Damian Lillard.
The grandma analogy to the last question is great (and funny)! If I were a Blazers fan, I’d want the deal to be done sooner rather than later to the Heat or anyone else. Keeping Lillard on that roster makes no sense for him or the team. Get a fair, not ridiculously unrealistic, package of assets, and move on. They are now a young team with interesting players and many picks to keep building and/or trading in the future. Like the Kings and Grizzlies in the recent past, or Thunder and Rockets presently, they have something to look forward to.
Whew, I certainly relate to the analogy of driving grandma's stuff around. And I've spent all summer arguing with Blazers fan that want to drive that thing around until we can sell it for a good price. Just dump that thing on the side of the road so we can move on with our lives!
I also relate to his answer about "who are you excited about getting from the Heat?" and he says "um..Spo?" I mean, I love the Skyforce, so I would be excited to see Cain, Highsmith, Robinson, and Jovic in a Blazers uniform. But I definitely understand his perspective. The Blazers are trading their best player of this century and all they're getting in return is draft picks and prospects. Herro is an excellent player, but they have a team full of guards, so it's not moving the needle.
A couple other things I like:
He does a great job pointing out how directionless everything feels in Portland. I'm glad he thinks that will be resolved after a Lillard trade, I think it's been a mess ever since they fired Stotts.
And he admits that the Blazers are going to tank, which I hate, but I also hate that they're pretending to compete. Tanking sucks, and half-assed tanking takes twice as long. Just rip the bandaide off, this team has been terrible for two years and is afraid to do anything different.
I don’t understand why portland doesn’t want Hero. They can trade Simmons and then pair scoot and Tyler in the backcourt. I think that would be a helluva tandem. Get Jovic and a few firsts. Simmons should be easier to move. Who do you think he could fetch in a separate blazer deal? You know a lot about Portland.
I think the Portland front office is a bunch of dummies. They had two choices: trade Scoot for a vet or trade Dame for a rebuild. They did neither and now they've painted themselves into a corner.
Instead of admitting they screwed up and trading Dame and moving on, they want to act like they're in control of the situation by doing nothing. So now it's like Dave Deckard said, they're trying to start a journey, but they have a bunch of luggage from the last trip still in the trunk and they don't know what to do with it.
So until they trade Dame, everything just kind a sucks in Portland. Some people think that if they hold out long enough, some great trade will come along, and maybe they're right. But until they do, Blazers fans will spend our time arguing about Dame instead of getting excited about Scoot, which sucks.
We all know same will end up in Miami. Blazers need to be done with this trade. What the appear to be offering - all things considered - is ok. As great as dame is, beginning to wonder if there is much of a market for him.
Trade Dame to Miami. Obtain Herro and start him with Scoot. Heck, bring Simmons off the bench. That would be a potent trio. Not sure if Sharpe can play the 3? Matisse and Little?
Those of us looking to see heat sign a journeyman pg on the cheap: apparently spurs are done with Cam Payne... https://www.brightsideofthesun.com/2023/9/11/23868666/spurs-to-release-former-phoenix-suns-pg-cam-payne

oh no, the Heat will be stuck with a roster that goes to The Finals or Conference Finals almost every year!
Oh no! 😉
Shams is writing that it’s Miami or bust for Dame, meaning he will report to play for portland if it doesn’t work out. But no other team.

Really? Dame fatigue in Portland, music to my ears!
While Heat and Port snoozing on this deal....lets go Jovic, Serbia! Tall order vs Canada with 7 NBAers for the chance to advance in the finals.
Jovic is in the finals vs Germany🙂 Canada and US will play for the bronze medal game only
Yeah!! Sad they won't be facing team USA, Schroder and Germany held on to win.
Two chokes in 3 games. Fire the head coach! Promote the next guy!
Here’s another proposal I really like:
“ Miami Heat Receive: Collin Sexton, Kelly Olynyk
Utah Jazz Receive: Kyle Lowry, 2028 First-Round Pick (MIA)“
A return of KO and a 24 year old pg who can score and shoot. Not a big assist guy and, of course, the Heat would have to be certain he’s healthy.
Anyway, just killing time during this gosh awful lull. Canes and Dolphins seasons starting should help.
Heat throw in a second round pick for Canadian Heat Fan to come back to HHH
Sold!
Woods 2 years, $5.7 million to Lakers. No matter what anyone thinks about him, that’s a nice cheap deal for him.
As I said, I watched him a lot in Dallas. Great player, but has large problem with focus.
