I looked at Dru’s 3 game totals. He has shot 9-28, 1-6 on 3p, with 11 turnovers, 13 assists, and 13 fouls. Not only do I think he’s definitely not an answer at pg right now, but I think the Heat would be better served on their 2 way contracts by adding Swider, another player (maybe Champagnie), with Cain getting a regular contract. Of course, the Heat still need to make a trade to get a pg, or make room for one (Nunn?).

Heat needs a good two-way PG (15+ppg/6+ apg/33%+ 3pt).

Note: 33% 3pt shooter = 50% 2 pt shooter.

As long as it's not a volume shooter (i.e. bench player).

Maybe he could ask Wade for help in managing his affairs since that is yet one more thing Wade is better at. 😆

Bucks have a rookie coach that just fired his veteran assistant. Celtics got rid of their three toughest players and replaced them with a soft center and a guard that Butler roasted in the playoffs. And the Sixers are even more dysfunctional than usual, which is more dysfunctional than usual.

I am more confident than last year that the Heat are going to win the East (again)

We do need a back up PG. Deep down in my spirits, I feel there is that unknown player someplace. Finding him is the big mystery. By the way, what happened to Dragic? He can still give us some quality 10 to 12 minutes.

In Miami at the moment, training and waiting.... for Heat to call, I believe.

Thanks. Did not know he is in Miami. He deserves a call from what I have seen of the PG position during this preseason.

Several problems. First, Heat needs starting point guard. Lowry is great option as backup point guard. Goran can serve only for insurance in case of injury. Then there are tax problems, with Goran and current rooster Heat are above new defined tax line (second apron, I believe). So Goran can only return back in case of bigger trade, likely involve Lowry.

Lowry is terrible. He should be traded for a bag of chips.

Is it just me or does Highsmith look like (a future version of) PJ Tucker 2.0?

He said he wanted to emulate Tucker last season. He’s been better than what I expected when we first signed him.

I agree. He has worked hard to improve his game on both ends. He is definitely a very good defensive player and his 3 is coming along well. He needs to work on his free throw shooting (42.9% career).

Another fun game.

Champagnie stood out this time.

Jovic is rusty.

Nothing new actually. We have really deep team, but no point guards except Lowry. JRich seems ok last night in that role, but I don't see him survive in the real game 20 minutes at that position.

Jimmy is out for "conditioning". I wonder if this is related to the "dental procedure" that kept him out of the last game. If he misses the next preseason game with "fatigue", I think we should start to worry

The toll of NBA stretches is beginning to tell on Jimmy. Apart from Bam, he needs a 2nd player to help with the offensive burden. That is why missing out on Damian was disappointing. Hopefully, if Herro stays healthy, the burden will be less on Jimmy. We have had recurrent issues where Bam and Herro have not. stayed healthy together to help Jimmy in the play offs.

If I had to rank Miami's top 10 rotation players, they would be: Butler, Bam, Herro, Martin, Bryant, Highsmith, Cain, Love, Jaquez, Lowry

Next 5: Richardson, ORobinson, Jovic, DRobinson, Smith,

Two-ways: Swider, Champagnie, Hampton

Top trade candidates (possibly along with a draft pick), if a quality PG becomes available:

Jovic, Lowry, DRobinson, ORobinson, Martin

* Duncan, Jovic and a pick for Brogdon works for me.

Swider will definitely be in the rotation.

I don't think he will be on regular contract roster as long as Duncan is around.

He definitely will be on a regular contract. The heat don't have enough consistent shooters.

Unless there is a trade where we send out more than we bring back, the Heat only have one spot open. They will initially carry 14 players due to the tax. The most likely candidate for that spot imo in Cain, with Swider sliding (haha) into a 2 way contact. That would allow him to play in 50 regular season games.

Agree and will be surprised if that is not what happens.

I think the top-4 is pretty set, and I think Lowry and Love will start the season in the rotation and will be part of the playoff rotation. That makes six. After that, I think it's flexible.

Duncan, Bryant, and J-Rich are vets, so they're the default if nobody steps up. You've got five solid dudes - Jamie J, Cain, Highsmith, O-Rob, and Jovic - that need to earn their minutes. That already puts you at 14! In the old NBA, you could only carry 12! Anyway, to round out the roster you have Dru and Swider, plus a few other Skyforce dudes I've probably never heard of.

This is the NBA, and stars win championships. But this team has really fun depth. The 10-15 on this roster is better than the 6-10 for teams like Boston and Milwaukie. I hope we get to see some of those guys get consistent minutes this season

I think spots will open up for the younger ones after a trade or two are made.

I like the idea that the Heat have a few veteran bench guys and a lot of promising young prospects fighting to take their minutes

Apart from Bam, it seems this game was meant to look at the depth of Heat's bench.

yeah I think this was a tryout for the 15th roster spot and the 2-way contracts for the Skyforce guys. I guess we're all on the Cain bandwagon. I'm rooting for Orlando Robinson (does he already have a contract?) and Dru Smith (I think he can be the next Gabe). Anyone I'm missing?

Highsmith was very good, so was Cain. Both should be on team. Not sure about O Robinson. But Bryant will be a good backup. Not sure about Richardson either. Before he got hurt, looked limited. May need to find someoe else at PG. Not sure about Jovic either. Swider has nice shot, may develop, but will take time. Champaigne can really drive, he also could develop, again will take time though. Not sure about D Smith either.

TheAlien's avatar

Agree with everything you said except for O Robinson. He seems to be impactful at the rim but with very limited minutes it is difficult to gauge his consistency.

Expand full comment
Bout30man's avatar

Maybe so on O Robinson. And if he isn't ready now, he could still develop. The good thing is what Bryant has shown looks really promising. That is one way this team is definitely better. The one way it probably isn't better is a point guard. We will miss Vincent if we stay with what we have. I feel like I see that clearly. And Vincent wasn't that great that he is irreplaceable. But, we need to do something at PG.

If Dragic is healthy and available, in my opinion he is a better option than D Smith.
