We need dwight howard as the starting center and bam at power forward

Expand full comment

Reading this article, its clear, that nothing is clear. But there will be changes.

Bam and Butler are staying, true, and I dont see a chance to keep both of Vincent and Strus.

I suppose we need Vincent more, so its Strus which will leave, and he will be replaced with Robinson or Herro in starting lineup.

I see Love and Zeller both gone, and starting one of Jovic or Highsmith at four, which wont be a bad thing. Yurt would be a backup center then, and Robinson his backup. In backcourt, Lowry and Cain can be in rotation.

Pleayers from group of Robinson, Lowry, Herro, Oladipo can be traded at some point in the season without heavely hurt the team to get some reinforcement. Thats not good enough for a star, but it might be good enough for 2 really good players, one in frontcourt, one in backcourt.

I think Loved comes back next season. And I think his passing becomes a bigger part of the offense.

now we're the same with the rest of the league minus the newly minted champs. pondering the future of our team with all these postulations. my take...activate the young guns. trade/waive some of the vets and Dunc. whatever Riley and co decides im going to ride with them. Go Heat!

Duncan robinson + 18th pick for Vucevic.

1. Yes, Spo loves small ball .

2.Yes, small ball got us to 3 out of 4 EC finals.

3.Yes, the road to success is often long and hard; and perseverance always triumphs.

4. Yes, the Heat have achieved great feats with players who are no household names.

4.Yes, we need to consider the owner's pocket.

5. Yes, the winners of the NBA Finals in 2016 (Lakers beat Heat in NBA finals), 2022 (Bucks beat Heat in the EC finals to advance to the NBA finals) and 2023 (Nuggets beat Heat in NBA finals) had to go through the Heat to win those championships.

Conclusion of the matter: Heat lost all those finals because of mismatch playing small ball. Next move is to seriously think of how to offset mismatch next season by adding some size that the Heat MUST use when it counts to the team and not have them sitting on the bench. Doing the same thing over and over again with the same disappointing result (i.e, playing small ball again without making room for mismatch next season), some say is the definition of insanity. I say it is the definition of dumb.

Yeah, I just don't think this is the way it played out at all : the Heats small ball team held the Nuggets to 94 points in game 5 and to an average of 104 points in the series. This is, by a pretty wide margin, was the lowest they averaged in any round of the playoffs (114 round 1, 116, round 2, and 117 in round 3 against the Lakers which was probably the biggest team they faced with AD).

The Heat's problem was they couldn't score and needed another creater/shooter. Someone like Herro (or if you think he wouldn't be good enough someone like Dame).

Well, in that case expect same result next year.

Another trip to the Finals? Sounds good. Hope Herro will be healthy, but can't control that.

If we end up keeping jovic, yurt, and cain, I'm actually not super worried about the next crop. Some large eggs getting hatched slowly in them labs. At least one is gonna work out. Yurt worries me for health tho a little bit. Wasn't the fastest laterally and a bad ankle injury doesn't exactly promise this is something we should expect drastic improvement from. But then again, young as fuck. Eager to see the development.

I'm super curious how the cain and jovic projects turn out, especially. Jovic has been taken in by charon as a personal project to hear the insider voices say it. I don't think they're working on this kid like a typical 4. In the brief preseason, cain showed some slick, consistent, and most of all productive off ball movement. My sentimental ass is waiting to see them get their two man game together like denver's 2 j's ^^

Gna be a long off season for sure. Alrdy sweating the gap til summer league lol

Sorry not sorry for the tldr. Final thanks to our magnificent org and incredible community here on HHH. Long time reader, first postseason poster, but I'll be out here yelling GO HEAT on this thing till the end of me. Thanks to everybody on here, and especially all the og's for fostering the community like you have. Yall have been amazing through w's and l's alike. So someone writes that I don’t see Butler getting traded because I - I!! - don’t want him to leave. As if I have any influence on that. If I had any influence, I would’ve pulled Strus and Vincent early and put in Highsmith and Martin. If I had any influence, I’d have given Yurt plenty of minutes when we had big leads so he could be ready to contribute when games were on the line and Bam needed a rest or we just wanted to throw more size out there.

The offseason is not about what ‘I’ want. It’s about what the team is likely to do. Anybody watching this team for any period of time knows they are loyal to loyal players to a fault. I love UD, but he’s been a waste of a roster spot for at least 3-4 years. I wish they had made him a coach so he could continue to mentor the players on the court and in the locker room.

I’d be willing to trade anybody if it helped the team. I’ve advocated many times for the team to get younger, more athletic, taller.

As the author of this article states:

“We can already eliminate Bam Adebayo or Jimmy Butler from getting moved. They’re not getting traded. If you’re planning your hypothetical offseason plans around either one of them getting traded, you’re wasting your time and you’re wasting everyone else’s time around you, for those that have to hear/see it.”

That’s reality. It has nothing to do with what I, or anybody else wants.

one of my favorite things about being a Heat fan is that I don't have to worry about them trading their best players. Jimmy and Bam aren't going anywhere.

Expand full comment

I’m not against trading anyone as long as you get value in return. It’s like stocks. I’d be fine giving you some of my Apple stock for some of your Berkshire Hathaway. 😀

Expand full comment

Except they're human beings. You can't really measure them in terms of value without considering things like attitude, conditioning, fit, etc.

You don't trade your core players after making it this far in three out of the past four seasons. Pat Riley doesn't even go after the long rebuild when the team stinks, you think he wants to rebuild when they're good?

He's going to add to the roster. They need to add a guard that can help carry the scoring load, and they're already adding Herro, so if the Heat are making a trade, it has to be for someone better than that. I think Dame is your perfect fit for intangibles, or Zach LaVine as a perfect fit on paper. Trade Lowry and draft picks for a team that wants to shed salary. Add Herro or Duncan if needed. Then go out and find a bruiser at Power Forward (the next PJ Tucker or Jae Crowder).

From there, watch all the experts pick the Sixers and Celtics to wine the East and then watch the Heat kick their asses (again).

Expand full comment

Yes, true. I meant in general, I’m fine with trading anyone . I don’t think you do that here.

Expand full comment

gotcha. I am a little more sentimental.

I think guys like D-Wade and Zo and UD earned the right to be above that, and I think Jimmy Butler should probably be elevated to that status after this 4-year run.

I also think Bam is basically the new Udonis now that UD is retired. I think there is a huge intangible value in having him around , especially if the entire rest of the team eventually gets replaced over the next few years.

And it probably goes without saying that i don't think UD was a waste of a roster spot. I have a weird perspective of watching the Blazers fire their Coach and GM and trade all their players and try to 'rebuild', and I've developed a deep appreciation for Heat Culture, and how there are so many things besides talent that matter when chasing success in this league.

The funny thing is that I’m not at all against his proposed trade scenario. One thing you and I have always had in common is we both want the Heat to get younger, taller, more athletic. I’m just stating what the general consensus is - that it is unlikely Butler gets traded, particularly if he doesn’t want to.

So, here’s a proposal, again with the assumption that Butler isn’t going anywhere. Herro, Lowry, and the 18th pick for VanVleet and Siakam. I believe the numbers work, Raptors are looking to go younger, and Lowry could mentor the youngsters on his expiring contract and retire a Raptor, which would be appropriate. Lineup of Bam, Siakam, Butler, Duncan, and VanVleet. Bench of Martin, Highsmith, Cain, O Robinson, Yurt, Jovic, Dipo, maybe Vincent. Editing here to tweak this.

Tyler Herro is an interesting situation. We don’t get to the finals with him with his bad volume shooting and bad defense. However, we had no shot in the finals without him.

Tyler Herro has been on the team for four years. he was injured this year, and in 2 out of the other 3 we made the Finals and Game 7 of to Conference Finals. So yeah, I don't think having him on the team prevents them going to the Finals.

If I were GM... Not having PJ Tucker's girth became really apparent against the Nuggets. We need a legit big man who can play defense. I know they don't grow on trees, but it's about time to move Bam to the PF position. Bam needs to work on his 3 pt game in order for this to work. Imagine having both Bam and another big to get rebounds, set picks and score around the basket... I love what Lowry did in the postseason, but we need a legit, lengthy scorer who can also play D at a higher level. They don't grow on trees, either, but with the assets we have, we should be able to make something happen. These are the two greatest areas of need when watching the playoffs this year.

Who would I keep? Butler, Bam, Caleb, Vincent, Duncan and Struss. Keep Jovic, Highsmith and Jamal Cain, also. Trade everyone else. It's not that the others suck, but you have to trade someone to get someone.

Go get some winners, Pat!

Without Jimmy, we don't even make it out of the first round. Let's look at the years before Jimmy got here... Now, let's look at our playoff success after he got here. The actions speak for themselves.

Let's take it a step further... Let's look at the last five NBA final champions. Each of them featured multiple All Stars on their way to the championship. Maybe if Jimmy had legit All Star help, this conversation wouldn't even take place.

I get that we all want to win the Finals, but targeting Jimmy for running out of gas is not it. How many other teams would gladly take Butler from us? Answer... Almost all of them.

Expand full comment

Good let them have him. We wouldn’t be here without Caleb Martin let’s be for real now. He absolutely destroyed the Celtics ain’t no way around it. Jimmy has had 1 good series and hasn’t since the bucks, like we being honest here or not. Wouldn’t be here without jimmy but in reality without Giannis getting hurt. Now y’all need him to get carried and last time I checked Bam was an allstar not Jimmy so that point is moot you mean bam needs an allstar

Butler Herro for Simons and portlands #3 pick. Trade said pick to Toronto for OG. Free agents targets: kristaps porzingis, naz Reid, Christian wood brook lopez, Pj Washington, maybe #18 for John Collins. Build around Simons bam and og and see if you can make another impromptu run to the finals.

Depending on the free agents Mia gets a core of bam og and simons competes in the east,

Call me names call me a troll blah blah blah but it’s a better option than running it back, trading Tyler (because what are you really gonna get back with just him) or trading for an oft injured 33 year old small guard while we just seen what happens to small guards in the finals

I actually appreciate you coming up with an idea for our next step, one n which we offload Jimmy. And, we are so constrained by myriad issues in any attempt to improve this roster that it is possible the team and Jimmy come to this decision. So, it is an interesting scenario even if some of the trade values come into question. You do seem to overblame Jimmy, expecting more on a night when he had admittedly a bad game and yet was the only player capable of scoring as we went down the stretch. At the end he shoudered a heavy load, one too much for any single player. You see, even though on some level you are right that Playoff Jimmy was not himself as the playoffs went on, but that was because he lacked support and it wore him out. You give Jimmy enough quality players around him and he will deliver a championship.

Thanks for the excellent article. The article explains why it is quite complicated to make the moves required to get a top player, third star. It also definitely guts your draft choices and possibly your roster.

And, most years these coveted players dont move or you are in direct competition with about 25 teams, many of whom have more assets than the Heat.

So, could be tough to improve. In several ways the Heat are boxed into their situation and have taken their never rebuild mantra as far as it can go.

OTOH, having a star Jimmy and a second player as great as Bam makes it hard to give up on trying one more time to climb to the mountaintop.

There are some hard choices facing the Heat. Age is catchng up to some of our most integral players and this team will surely decline if we run it back without a talent infusion.

The Heat are at crossroads, and this offseason could bing some big surprises. But, we should rejoice in the wonderful ride we just went on, as they gave a fan so much joy. Thanks Heat so much for 22-23, you truly gave it your all and achieved beyond all expectations.
