Meanwhile in Portlandia...

Avatar for Cranberry Rasta

If he takes back a bad return for Dame, his career as a GM is effectively over.

Cronin is in a losing situation since he won’t get anything else but Miami’s offer. He’s over a barrel and he’s sure to get outdueled by DOLLA in this staredown. He’ll wait as long as he can but it won’t change anything, since DOLLA will only play for one team. That’s the caveat here and if you’re unwilling to accept that then we’re done here, there’s no reason to argue anymore about it since I’m of the belief that DOLLA will stick it out even if it means sitting out training camp.

I’ve already said why Cronin will look bad if he plays petty and refuses to do right by DOLLA. He will get roasted by the national media, who will have enough info to know Joe is just being petty, when there are no other offers coming in. Also, I believe Joe has to do right by DOLLA in order to make himself look good. He’s no Danny Ainge, Morey, Riley or Popp and has very little respect around the league and will only be seen as petty if he treats DOLLA like he’s Ben Simmons. He will also want to have an amicable outcome between the team and its favorite player. There’s no way Cronin will make DOLLA sit out a year. He’s not big enough to do that, no matter what bluff comes out of his mouth about how long this could take.

Every time I think bias and stupidity can’t get worse, there is this from Jeff Teague:

“D-Wade has Shaq and Bron. He ain’t never really been by himself. When the Miami Heat were by themselves, they were trash. Harden is better, bro. I am sorry,” Teague said

I have no problem with anyone feeling Harden is/was better than Wade (though I don’t agree).

Note to Teague:

Harden had Durant and Westbrook - won nothing.

Harden had Durant and Irving - won nothing.

Harden had Embiid and Maxey (and others) - won nothing.

Wade is a winner. Harden is not.

I remember a timeout from the 2022 playoffs second round. Dont remember which game, but miami was getting up to a double digit lead in the second half. The studio broadcast brought up the miami bench where spo was telling the boys to build the lead to 16-18 points. He kepts saying "so they see it and feel it". He slipped a bit and said "sp James sees it."

Spo knew you show beardo a semi-intimidating obstacle and he's gna call a uber. That's a real life NBA coach talking about a former MVP.

You would show some reserve talking like that about the last dude on the bench on the skyforce is what I'm saying.

Kyle Lowry, Nikola Jovic and 2 picks for Lillard. It has to be Cronin take it or move on. Kyle will be an excellent mentor. Nikola and 2 picks will add to Portland's freshmen. I will not include Martin or Duncan in any deal. Feeding Cronin's greed achieves nothing for Miami. If Martin gives away too much, it will need at least 2 years to develop and replace those players, because that is how long it took to develop Duncan and Martin into rotational players. So forget competing for championship this coming season or the next. And then Lillard will be 35 and probably receiving the torch from Butler who won't be able to give you solid 30 minutes in 2 years.Miami think now and your prospect in 2 years!

Kyle Lowry, Caleb Martin, Nikola Jovic and 3 picks for Lillard. Lowry is on expiring contract and can be an excellent mentor to Scoot Henderson and Portland's young guards and locker room presence. Martin is a good rotation player/possible starter. Jovic is a good young player to develop. NBA is going to price itself out of existence.

P.S. No athlete is worth $60 million a year, guaranteed! What are they going to pay Luca, Jokic and Greek Freak $100M?

Too much to give away for one player. Lillard is a very good player no doubt but he is no Jordan, Larry or Kobe.

Considering what Portland wants, Miami could wind up keeping Herro and instead give up a player and a pick and get a starting quality PG. There are few teams out there who would do the trade.

Ty is gone now or soon he will demand a trade. His morale won't be the same. It's never good to be mentioned in a trade that falls through. What Portland wants for Dame, is a mischaracrerization of what their immediate and future plan for Dame was before his request for a trade. Let's get that straight. He was not so much valued as they now make it out to be, if he were he would have been traded a longtime ago. It is no secret that Dame stayed so long in Portland because he was the fans favorite and any trade would have hurt Portland economically in terms of ticket sales and revenue. And Portland did not want to mess that up with a Dame trade. The difference now is that Dame requested for the trade and that hurt the fans, just like LeBron 's 2014 decision hurt his fans base in Cleveland and Akron. Portland is using the fans emotions as an excuse to cash in and to stick it out to Dame and Miami.Cronin would not have dared to irate the fans, if Dame did not request for a trade. In reality, how many teams can offer what Cronin wants. None. Not to talk of risking it with a disgruntled, Dame. My prediction is that Cronin will lower his asking price to other teams to get rid of Dame and avoid a crisis in Portland's locker room but Dame has to agree signing with this team with a reconstructed contract that will see him leaving for Miami in a season or two, during which time that other team will try to convince him to stay.

Expand full comment

It is all very clear to me now what happened. It's also clear to Dame and to some Portland fans.

Portland's owner/management convinced Dame to extend his contract with the promise/commitment to recruit/build a contending team around him. They did this knowing full well that they had every intention of re-building for the future and not building a contender around him, as promised/committed.

When Portland did finally reveal their rebuilding plans by their actions, they banked on Dame becoming upset and demanding a trade. They "assumed" he would provide a list of several contending teams he would be willing to be traded to. They further assumed they would be able to offer him to the highest bidder and make an enormous haul in players and draft picks (ala Durant, Gobert, Mitchell, etc.). They thought wrong!

As expected, once Dame realized he had been deceived/lied to, he did ask/demand to be traded to a contending team. However, what Portland's owner/management did not bank on was that he would insist on being traded to only one team, Miami!

This entire clusterf&%k could have been avoided if Portland's owner/ management had only been up front with Dame about their rebuilding plans before the draft and given him an opportunity to provide a list of contending teams he would accept a trade to. Since it didn't go down that way, everyone is now having to deal with the fallout of that miscalculation ...most of all the Portland fans.

Jody Allen and John Cronin are now going to have to bite the bullet and accept a less than optimal trade package for Dame because of their own miscalculations and incompetence. Portland fans deserve better than these two pendejos. Allen needs to sell the team and allow for a fresh beginning for the organization and the fans. As for Miami fans, we just need to be patient and let this thing play itself out. One way or another, Miami is not through putting together a championship contender for 2023-2024!

GO HEAT!!!

Funny thing is, if they knew that, they shouldn’t have given him the extension. There would be more teams interested and more offered if he only had 2 years left on his contract. Those final 2 years has actually made him less valuable due to the amount and his age.

Precisely so, they undervalued him in their scheme of things and when he decided that he does not want to be part of their scheme, they inflate their valuation of him.

When it happened to Simmons, they withheld his $20 million pay. He sued and they settled for an undisclosed amount. This article pretty much sums it up. Making promises to Lillard about building a contending team around him, giving Jerimi Grant a $160M extension, then drafting Dame's replacement and going into full re-build mode, sounds like total incompetence to me. No wonder they are pegged to finish in bottom 4 in the West. https://sircharlesincharge.com/2023/07/21/nba-trade-rumors-blazers-not-serious-damian-lillard/?utm_campaign=FanSided+Daily&utm_source=FanSided+Daily&utm_medium=email&sc=e0273490fd355e2c28bdb25751d41af65a4dd80936ff00a80be9866c97887955

As is, Miami is favored to be a top three team in the East. Riley has until the trade deadline to make a move. With Lowry's expiring contract, a veteran/battle tested team, young assets and draft picks to wheel and deal with, he is in no rush.

As far as depth, they have a plethora of veterans (Butler, Bam, Herro, Lowry, Martin, Bryant, Love, Richardson) and are developing up-and-coming undrafted players all the time (e.g. Orlando Robinson, Cain, Highsmith, and others) not to mention young studs like Jaquez and Jovic.

As far as a waiting game, Miami has a ton of time to wait. However, the clock is ticking on Allen/Cronin. After all, Allen/Cronin promised Lillard that if he signed the extension, they would build a contending team around him before he retired. Now, we all now see what a crock that turned out to be...most of all Dame.

Riley is as patient as they come. If this deal eventually falls through, he'll find another quality PG elsewhere to trade for over the next 7 months. Meanwhile, he'll just wait until Allen/Cronin come around. Remember, it was Dame who picked Miami...not the other way around.

Some media are already reporting Cronin is just "trying to milk this Dame situation" that there's already a reasonable deal. Blazers fans are increasingly getting agitated with the Heat crying for a "better deal". Lots of them really heartbroken abt the separation hoping they'll get something good in return. That "good" seems too much that's why this is dragging on.

Expand full comment

I think the math is pretty tricky from the side of Blazers fans. Over the past year, there have basically been two camps. One side that wanted to trade Dame and fully commit to the rebuild, and one side that wanted to trade the draft pick and fully commit to Dame (as a Blazers fan that grew up watching Pat Riley run the Heat, I was obviously on the side of trading the pick and building around Dame).

Once the Blazers decided to keep the pick and not only commit to a rebuild, but actually used the pick to draft Dame's replacement, the writing was on the wall. Everyone knew the Blazers needed to trade Dame and commit to the rebuild. Everyone including Dame. The only person who doesn't seem to see it is the Blazers GM.

Now this is where things get tricky. The GM (Cronin) basically said he wouldn't trade Dame unless Dame asked for a trade, so Dame asked to be traded to Miami. Fans are upset because they want a huge return for one of the greatest players in franchise history, and it doesn't look like they're going to get it. Maybe it's because of his age and contract, maybe its because they have an incompetent GM. But when you're angry and looking for someone to blame, the easiest explanation is that it's because Dame only wants to go to Miami and Miami doesn't want to gut their team for Dame.

With that in mind, it's almost impossible to come up with a trade that works for Miami that won't enrage Blazers fans. Lots of them are already saying they'd rather do a worse trade just so they don't send Dame to Miami. Fortunately for the Heat, the fans aren't the ones that are making the trade. But unfortunately for the Heat, it's hard to envision a scenario where Cronin sends Dame to Miami for a reasonable and realistic trade and doesn't get absolutely roasted by the fans, which is one of the reasons he's afraid to pull the trigger on a trade.

Cronin knew what he was doing going in. At least he though he knew. He and the owner (Jody Allen) planned to rebuild from the beginning. The plan was to promise Dame to build a contender around him then to reneg on that promise. They knew this would piss Dame off and result in a trade request. Allen/Cronin then figured to put Dame out on the open market and get a huge haul like the ones paid for KD, Gobert and Mitchell, in order to kick-start their re-build.

Unfortunately for them, Dame threw a monkey wrench into their plans by demanding a trade...to one specific team...the Miami Heat. Furthermore, he limited their options by indicating he would not play for any other team.

The best laid plans of mice and men (and owners), sometimes don't work out as expected. Now Portland has a cancer growing in their organization and among their fanbase, all because the Portland owner and GM were not honest with Dame from the beginning about their intent to rebuild. Had they been, he could have given them a list of several contending teams he would agree to be traded to and Portland could have gotten that big haul they were expecting. Instead, they are now dealing with the fallout.

Portland fans should be in an uproar. Allen needs to sell the team to a more competent and proactive owner, as Phoenix did. Then and only then will things improve. Meanwhile, we all wait for the inevtable.

Expand full comment

I'm of the opinion that Cronin has no idea what he's doing. Amongst most Portland fans, the theory is that they're trying to rebuild, but want to keep Dame to sell tickets. Lots of people want Jody Allen to sell the team, but I'm worried that will result in the leaving town
